March Music Writing Challenge Day 6: Foxing

"Foxing" (self-titled)

I don’t say this lightly…this album (and band for that matter) has changed my life in so many ways. Foxing entered my gaze in 2016 or 2017, when I was in a rough mental headspace. I saw them open for Manchester Orchestra at the House of Blues in Orlando and was completely blown away.

The vocals were raw, the instrumentation was KILLER, and the vibe was immaculate. Then, the lead singer Conor brought a trumpet out on stage for a song, and I knew I had found a new favorite band.

I fell in love with their music nearly instantly and decided to see them headline in Orlando about a year later at The Social. There were maybe 100 or so people there, so I snagged the front row and was pelted all night by the sweat flying off of Conor’s hair, it was SICK! They played a brilliant show, as they always do, and I’ve been following them closely ever since.

I recently saw them perform their new record “Foxing”, a self-titled masterpiece…and they somehow have gotten even better. Conor’s vocals are crisp and haunting, raw and longing, and identical to the song recordings (if not even better). This new record that they released in September of 2024 has taken them to an entirely new level for me.

The ripping screams of Hell 99, the heartbreaking softness of Cleaning, all combine to showcase a fantastic representation of Foxing as a whole. Eric Hudson, the guitarist and keyboardist, finds a new way to shock me with his experimental instrumentation, fueling the fire beneath me to eventually create my own music.

I have nothing but absolute love for this band, and if you enjoy indie-rock, post-rock, or alternative music at ALL, you will find a Foxing song that you won’t want to ever part with, I guarantee it.

All of their music is streaming on Bandcamp, Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. Check them out and let me know if you dig Hell 99, it’s in my Foxing top 5.
