March Music Writing Challenge Day 17: Manchester Orchestra

"Black Mile to the Surface"

I saw the band Manchester Orchestra in 2017 at the House of Blues in Orlando, and it remains one of the most important live music experiences of my life. The energy that I feel in that venue moves me to this day, as I’ve seen many bands that have etched unwavering markings into my soul. This was the night I saw Manchester Orchestra for the first time, as well as the band Foxing.

They had just released “Black Mile to the Surface”, and it remains my favorite album of theirs to this day. Manchester Orchestra are experts at shoving their hands into my metaphorical chest cavity and shaking up my emotional perception of the world. Some of my favorite tracks that touched me the deepest are: The Maze, The Gold, The Alien, The Grocery, and The Sunshine.

There’s a video on YouTube of them running through the entire album in an expertly-produced “livestream” of sorts; it’s amazing and I highly encourage you to watch it. I hope that if you do choose to give this album or artist a listen if even for a moment, and that it changes your life even a nano-amount.

They still tour regularly, and you can stream their music on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, and more!
