March Music Writing Challenge Day 14: Happy.
"Imposter Syndrome"
I would be doing everyone a disservice if I didn’t write about a Happy. album. “Imposter Syndrome” is probably my favorite album of theirs, and ever since I first heard it I’ve followed Tate Logan’s continued musical journey. As a fellow trans musician, he inspires me every single day and I can’t express how much I adore him and his art.
This is a true pop-punk album and has some of the most relatable and heartbreaking lyrics in the genre. My favorite song on the record, April is for Fools, is about losing a friend to an untimely death, and how Tate continues to think about them and experience life in their memory.
The lyrics, “And I hope you hear me every single time that I say your name / And I’ll tell my kids, I’ll tell my kids about you”, really hammer in the idea of continuing on in your own life and making sure they aren’t ever forgotten. I can’t imagine losing a close friend so young and this song is a beautiful way to grieve and attempt to heal from that experience.
If you like pop-punk, you WILL dig at least a handful of the songs on this album, I promise. Happy. is no longer an active band, but we have a lot of songs to go back to, and continuing to follow Tate on his solo journey is a TREAT.
